The Fisherman's Cove
Every fisherman truly seduced by the sport, novice or expert, knows the feeling: all awareness, all consciousness focuses on a single point in the water where the strike might come at any instant. Nothing breaks that laser beam of concentration when it is fixed with full intensity, hoping to tantalize the trout of the Vale of Kashmir.
The River Sindh is synonymous with the best fly fishing that Sonamarg has to offer with excellent habitat and abundant fly life, making your fishing experience one to remember. The Sindh trickles from the Tibetan highlands, down through forests and over bedrock to the freestone runs where wild brown trout run and the rainbow trout leap. Anglers access the river from The Villa Himalaya – a comfortable hotel located in a village. The region and the experiences are like traveling backwards through time. This is not the crowded hustle and bustle of cities, but rather an intimate glimpse of modest mountain people who live off of their hillside terraces and from which they can forage and barter.
Fly to Kashmir and then drive for two hours to the mountain valley of Sonamarg where you stay at a riverside hotel amidst conifer and walnut trees.

On arrival in the capital city of Srinagar, we drive to the city center, where we collect our fishing permits and equipment and then head off to the cooler mountains of Sonamarg located in the North West of the valley. On arriving, we check in at the Villa Himalaya hotel – a charming on the river edge hotel that boasts of scenic landscapes and a mighty river running in front of its lawns. Today we will be given a crash course of how to fit the rods, and how to fix the line, the spoons, the flies and how to angle the perfect shot without injuring the next comrade in arms. We relax at the riverside with a book while the staff keeps us well fed. After dinner retire to bed for we have an early morning start at Dawn. Overnight in hotel.

Day 02: The game begins
Dawn fishing is perhaps the best time as the river water is at a receding level and fishing becomes more comfortable then later in the morning. We will have to runoff in a wild, rushing river hurtling down from the mountains, over and around big rocks and boulders strewn across wide, grassy valleys to get the prize we seek today “The Rainbow Trout”. It is not necessary to be an experienced or accomplished trout fisherman to make the resulting blend of the elegant and the rustic, the passive and the active, the contemplative and the purposeful, worthwhile. Once you get the line hooked the fish thrashes, runs downstream, jumps twice but will be finally brought to a stubborn, stationary sulk near the shoreline boulders.

We spend the next couple of hours throwing the line back into the river while our guide helps to change flies, indicate the pools, carry the gear, string the fish and, in short, enable us to concentrate on the fishing without having to worry about all the things that will claim our energy and attention. Later we walk back to the hotel and after a 3 course breakfast, spend the afternoon at leisure. Later in the evening, we head back to the river for another round of fishing. Evening at leisure, overnight in hotel.
Day 03: Village walk / visit a fish farm /
Depart for airport
After breakfast we will take a short walk across the village, visiting its small school, the local mosque as well as a village house where we can converse with the elders about their daily life. Later we will get our bags, check out from the hotel and drive down to Srinagar. En-route we will visit a fish farm, where they breed fish for the local population. On arriving in Srinagar, we head to the airport or to a restaurant for a light meal before flying out of the valley.
